RISO Residency

Ithaca Print Commons is launching a month-long RISO residency for artists to use the Risograph duplicators and the space to make work, host workshops, events, and a culminating show. The residency is directed at the Tompkins County area, collaborating artists working in print, book arts, education, and community building. Over the residency, artists are asked to host a workshop, keep regular hours open to the public (negotiable), help to provide print/design services to the community, and have a show at the end of the month to showcase their work. The application and residency are free and, if accepted, includes a materials stipend. No housing is provided.

Outline of Residency

Artists are provided a key to the space and are able to access the space -

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday: 8:00 am to 6:00 pm

Thursday, Friday: 8:00 am to 8:00 pm

Saturday: 9:00 am to 6:00 pm

Sunday: 11:00 am to 5:00 pm

these times are strict - but can be extended for events with prior approval

  •  In the studio, artists have access to two  Risograph machines, four colors(black, red, medium blue, and yellow. more coming soon!), bookbinding equipment, other shared studio materials and are given a stipend/honorarium that can be used for materials, etc., at the artists' discretion/needs.

  • The space will continue to be open regularly to the public. During this time, the artist(s) can present work, sell work, offer workshops, offer/monitor printing time for community members who have taken a qualifying Riso workshop, and/or simply be open for the public to watch them in process/production. Ideally -

Thursday, Friday: 2:00 am to 8:00 pm

Saturday: 2:00 am to 6:00 pm

negotiable - but it must be regular

  • Artists offer a workshop open to the public on the Risograph machine or related processes during their residency.

  • Artists provide print/design services to community organizations for a low rate or free, depending on the organization and their needs. Material costs for these would not come out of their stipend/honorarium. Availability of this service would depend on demand and is not meant to take away from artists’ production.

  •  Residency would culminate in a show on the following First Friday; for example, Feb residents have a show on the First Friday of March.

Apply to the residency.

Application for the residency is always open. Preference is given to collaborating groups. These can be existing or new groups, artist groups, or hybrid groups. Collaboration and community building are central to our project and space. Tell us about your project(s), how the space and resources will enhance them, and how you will use them to engage and educate the community.

If a full month is not necessary, include the timeframe you would need instead and we can see if that can be accommodated.
